Four Things to Look for When Shopping for End Tables
Creating a room with a cohesive, well-designed feel means having parts that connect with one another, whether through pattern or color, or even the time period and aesthetic that defines them. But having pieces of furniture that connect is not the same as buying the matching ones. There was a time when people decorated their homes with matching furniture sets. This made shopping easier but designing a bit more difficult.

Rooms with corresponding sets often ended up looking predictable and uninspired. Nowadays, people with an eye for design are going in a different direction. More of us are branching out a lot more and buying parts that complement each other rather than combine. This is a great way to go but it may take a bit more practice to detect which pieces will combine to create exactly the right aspect of your space. Many of us are lost when it comes to knowing what works for what, especially when it comes to smaller furniture such as end tables.
End tables can usually be found on either side of a sofa or bed, but are also dotted in various areas around the house. They are incredibly versatile pieces of furniture and are often moved from one place to another.
Here are a few tips for choosing end tables:
Shape
When it comes to shaping you want to figure out where the table will be placed and what will work in that particular space.
For example, if it needs to go in a particular corner, you’ll probably want something square. If this is not a concern, you have more options.
Try to blend the table shapes into your bedroom. If you have an oval coffee table, square or rectangular end tables are a good contrast. Likewise, if you have a square coffee table, some semi-lune or round end tables can make a good counterpoint.
If you decide to use the same shape for all ends or side tables in a room, try to create interest by having them made of different materials.
Materials
Again, it’s all about mixing. A brass and marble coffee table can look great in a room with wooden or painted tables. A beautiful coffee table in rosewood is impressive when paired with brass tables. As long as styles complement each other, materials can be completely different.
Styles
Often people are afraid, but mixing styles creates visual interest in a room. A traditional Lawson or Birch sofa might look great when paired with modern end tables and vice versa. Or why not try a modern or mid-century side chair with a traditional side table?
Also remember that the final tables do not need to be combined. As long as sizes and styles relate, it is perfectly acceptable to have different end tables on either side of a sofa or bed.
Size
If your final tables are on each side of a sofa, make sure that your height and depth are as close to the height and depth of the sofa arms as possible. The same happens with side chairs. Not only does it look better, it makes it easier to reach for items on the table when sitting on the furniture.
If you can not find anything that fits exactly, you better go smaller than bigger.
If they are being used as bedside tables, the height should be almost equal to that of the mattress. Again, if this is not possible, a little lower is better than a little higher. When it comes to depth, 24 “is as big as you want to go in. Anything deeper can make it a bit difficult to get in and out of bed. So important, always make sure that any table you intend to use by your bed offers ample space for things that you will keep close to when you sleep, such as a book, alarm clock or table lamp.
As you can see, there are no hard and fast rules when it comes to choosing final tables. The most important thing to do is to find tables with the right size for your space once your options open. Just remember that the pieces in the room must connect in some way.
If the materials are different, try to keep similar styles; If shapes are different, try to keep similar materials. Try to remember that interior decoration is all about balance. The key is to make sure of your decorating choices. If you like a piece, this will work.
